Vicksburg is a little outside of Jackson and it is the home of the Civil War Memorial. Apparently Vicksburg sat at a vary strategic point in the Mississippi river during the civil war. It is quite a bit above the river which makes it a perfect point for canons and controlling the river. The Union took over a year to take Vicksburg, they tried a few times but the river current is swift so the boats have little control while the Confederates just kept shooting at them while they floated by. |

The guy here gave a great speech on the history of Vicksburg during the civil war. |

The canon crew did a demonstration of how they fired a canon, I never knew exactly how they fired one and it was very interesting. |

There are 8 positions, 1 thru 7 and a gunner. The gunner is in charge and tells the others what to do. The first thing they do is swab the canon with this big brush, then they load a charge (gun package with gun powder), load the ammunition (not in our demo), poke a hole in the bag from a little hole in the top of the canon, aim the canon, load the fuse and pull it with a long string to create a spark then BOOOOM |

BOOOOM and I mean BOOOOM |

Each state who was represented in the Vicksburg battle has a memorial, some are large, some are small. Almost all of them show the names of the fallen men who fought and died. |
